LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky placekicker Seth Hanson has been named to theAmerican Football Coaches Association Good Works Team for 1999. The teamhonors those athletes who show exceptional dedication to community serviceand to the betterment of the communities in which they live.

The two 11-man teams, NCAA Division I-A and a combined team from NCAADivisions I-AA, II, III, and the NAIA, honor players for their dedicationand commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Teamwas selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbandedin 1997, the AFCA took over the award. The individuals who make-up theseteams have a strong appreciation for community involvement and service.

Nominations were submitted to the AFCA by college sports informationdepartments. Nominees had to be actively involved and committed to workingwith a charitable organization, service group or other community serviceactivities. Candidates had to display sincere concern and reliability,while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations withwhich they were involved. Athletic ability was not a criteria.

Hanson, who is also member of the SEC Good Works Team, was chosen becauseof his involvement with UK’s “Cats That Care” service program. He is afrequent visitor to Shriner Children’s Hospital and has been a guestspeaker at more than 20 schools around Kentucky. Hanson participated in theDr. Seuss 95th Annual Read Across Lexington program and is an activeparticipant in Kentucky’s mentor program for local elementary schoolchildren. In addition, he is currently the president of the Fellowship ofChristian Athletes which allows him to speak at many churches and youthgroups expressing the role of faith in his life.

“To me being chosen for this honor means more to me than any athletic oracademic honor,” Hanson said. “The biggest thing is reaching others inlife to make their life better and it’s great that I get to use athleticsas a platform.”

Hanson is the fourth Wildcat chosen for the national Good Works Team,joining previous honorees Leon Smith (1994), Kurt Supe (1996), and JimmyCarter (1998).
