Women’s soccer falls to Florida, beats South Carolina.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 13, 1999) — The University ofKentucky women’s soccer team split its first twoconference matches this weekend, and are tied forfourth in the SEC Eastern Division.

On Friday in Gainesville, Fla., UK (2-2-1, 1-1SEC) fell to 1998 NCAA Champion Florida 2-1before a crowd of 2,311.

Freshman Elizabeth Ramsey got UK on the boardfirst when she netted an 18-yard shot in the 17th minute. Annie Gage andMargo Hafer were credited with assists on the play, as Ramsey’s goalmarked the first time this season that UF (6-0, 2-0) trailed its opponent.

Late in the first half, the Gators roared back behind Erica “Boo” Schubertand Abby Wambach. At the 40:19 mark, Schubert hit a 12-yard from theright side off Wambach’s cross. UF captain Sarah Yohe broke the tie withan eight-yard shot to the near post at the 42:54 to put UF up 2-1.

UK goalkeeper Beth Wells recorded seven saves for the Cats.

UK then picked up its first SEC victory of the season on Sunday as theWildcats downed South Carolina 2-1 in overtime.

Ramsey’s goal at the 93:96 gave the Cats their fifth straight victory over USCin as many matches. Keri Boyce eluded the USC defenders and slotted apass to Ramsey who knocked in the golden goal.

The Cats used the same scoring tandem on their first goal when Ramseytook the feed from Boyce and then fired a seven-yard shot into the far rightcorner of the goal.

“It was imperative we come away with at least a split this weekend – but wearen’t satisfied yet,” UK assistant coach Tim Bennett said. “We have to keepmoving forward and improving our level of play.” UK returns to action onThursday, Sept. 16, when the Cats play host to the Marshall ThunderingHerd. The match at the UK Soccer Complex will begin at 7 p.m.
