Jonathan Stark, formerly the world’s No. 1-ranked doubles player, is justone of the outstanding men’s tennis players set to compete in the 1999Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships, Aug. 2-8, at the Boone Tennis Centeron the UK campus.
Stark, who also climbed as high as No. 36 in the singles rankings, hasclaimed two singles titles and 17 doubles titles in his career. A $3million-winner on tour, Stark has played in all the Grand Slam events in1999 and won the doubles crown at the 1994 French Open.
Other entries into the Fifth Third event include up-and-comers GeoffGrant, Lionel Roux and Michael Tebbutt. Grant, Roux and Tebbutt are allranked just outside the top 100, and will look to climb in the rankingshere in Lexington.
Grant made a big impact in 1998, reaching the round of 32 at the U.S. Openand taking home the title at the ATP Winnetka event, where he topped Aussiesensation Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals.
Roux has been a top-50 player, reaching No. 48 in 1995. He has won over$1 million on tour and played in both the Australian and French Opens in 1999.
Tebbutt broke into the top 100 in 1995, reaching No. 87 in the worldrankings. He has two ATP Tour doubles titles to his name and has won over$1 million in prize money. He played singles at the 1999 Australian Openand has played doubles at every Grand Slam this season.
