LEXINGTON, Ky.– Kentucky had a season-high 23 hits, including a career-high five by junior Josh Loggins, and scored at least one run in each inning as they routed Cincinnati 22-6 Wednesday at Cliff Hagan Stadium on the UK campus. UK (24-28) had a home run in each of the first five innings and six in the first seven innings. John Wilson had a career-high two home runs in his first three at-bats. It was the most runs the Wildcats have scored this season.
UK built up a 10-1 lead after four innings. Senior Jason Colemire started the slugfest with a two-run homer in the first inning, his 12th of the season. Mark Murphy continued the scoring in the second with a double and moved to third on a Andy Bendix single. Sophomore Andy Green cleared the bases with a three-run homer, his second of the season. With UK ahead 6-1, Bendix drove Murphy in with a RBI single and scored on a single by David Cheatle to make it 8-1. Loggins connected on a two-run homer, his 12th of the season. Loggins, Bendix and Colemire are tied for the team-lead in home runs with 12 apiece. Left-hander Tim Rowland (3-1) picked up the win after allowing nine hits and four runs in seven innings of work, the longest outing of his career. Freshman Bradd Heyerly pitched the final two innings. Murphy went 3-for-4 with a career-high two doubles, moving him into a tie for fifth place on schoolis record charts for doubles in a season with 20. Bendix added three hits and Loggins also contributed two doubles. Freshman Robert Newton went 2-for-2, including his first career home run in a reserve role.
Tony Cento (7-5) picked up the loss for Cincinnati (15-34) in five innings of work, allowing 12 hits and 12 runs.
UK concludes its regular-season this weekend at home with a three-game series against 4th-ranked South Carolina. The first game of the series is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
