LEXINGTON, Ky – The future of American men’s tennis will make a stop on the road to glory at the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships in Lexington August 3-9.
Twins Bob and Mike Bryan dominated college tennis the past two years, leading Stanford University to back-to-back NCAA titles and winning the NCAA doubles title this year. Bob completed the dream of the brothers from Camarillo, California, by winning the collegiate singles title to become just the second person in 35 years to capture the Triple Crown of college tennis. In June, the brothers turned pro.
“Without question these twins are the future of American tennis,” said Dennis Emery, tournament director and University of Kentucky men’s tennis coach. “What makes them so special is not just their success or their potential, but the sheer joy with which they approach the game. They are can’t-miss superstars in doubles, singles and Davis Cup.”
The Lexington tournament serves as a stepping stone for players to earn enough world ranking points to gain entry into major pro tennis events on the ATP (men) and Corel WTA (women) tours. Past players in this event have made a major impact in the Grand Slam tournaments so far this year: At Wimbledon, Tommy Haas, a 1996 participant, upset Andre Agassi, and 1997 Lexington quarterfinalist Samantha Smith upset world No. 8 and former champion Conchita Martinez. At the French Open, 1997 Fifth Third competitor Ramon Delgado ousted No. 1-ranked Pete Sampras. Plus, 1995 Lexington quarterfinalist Chris Woodruff went on to claim a major title at last year’s Canadian Open.
The Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships is in its fourth year as a men’s event and second year as a women’s tournament, and benefits Lexington Habitat for Humanity. Tickets may be purchased at any of the 13 Lexington-area Fifth Third banking centers, or by calling 606-224-2276.
