Tough Day for Kentucky as Cats Finish Seventh at SEC’s
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kentucky Gymnastics competed at the SEC Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday held at the Legacy Arena at the BJCC. The Cats faced adversity and challenges as the team placed seventh overall scoring a combined 196.350.
Competing in Olympic order, the five-seeded Wildcats started out on vault. Senior Arianna Patterson held the top score in the event with a 9.875. Her awarded tally placed her in a tie for eighth on the overall leader board. Fellow senior Josie Angeny set a personal season record with her mark of 9.775.
In the second rotation, the uneven bars, the Cats faced challenges with landings not as solid as they had hoped. The top score on the event was held by junior Raena Worley who was able to perform a solid routine with sticky feet to complete her dismount scoring 9.900.
Kentucky moved to its third rotation in hopes of performing with balance and grace. On the balance beam, Angeny hit a 9.850 to hold the top score for UK. Her performance was followed by Worley and Patterson’s 9.800 on the team leader board.
To round out the first session of the SEC Championships, Kentucky looked to floor to save the day. Worley’s strong performance earned a 9.950 tying her for second overall on the event with Auburn’s Derrian Gobourne and Olympic Gold-Medalist Sunisa Lee.
Worley headed to the podium again for All-Around tying for sixth with a 39.450. She tied with Missouri’s Sienna Schreiber for the sixth-place finish.
The Florida Gators won the SEC Championship title overall after previously taking the SEC regular-season champion title as well.
