Jacob Cook Earns Fourth Top-20 Finish of Season at Pinehurst
PINEHURST, N.C. – Jacob Cook generated his team-leading fourth top-20 individual finish of the season to lead the way for the Kentucky men’s golf team at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2 this week. Cook earned a tie for 13th and played just 2-over par over his final two rounds. The Wildcats turned in a ninth place showing as a team.
“Without an unfortunate and accidental disqualification for one of our guys in the second round, this would have been a fairly solid performance by the guys,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “The good news is we learned some excellent lessons that will serve this team well going forward. We cannot wait for the Schenkel coming up soon.”
Cook led three players among the top 25 on the individual leaderboard that faced one of the toughest tests in golf and blustery conditions throughout the entirety of the opening two rounds. Senior Garrett Wood tied for 22nd, while sophomore Campbell Kremer produced a tie for 24th finish.
Junior Alex Goff had the best round of the final day with a 1-over par 71. Goff finished with three birdies over his final six holes to cap the tournament with some positive momentum. He placed 66th overall.
Cook fired a 2-over 72 on Tuesday. He suffered a pair of bogeys at the 12th and 14th but came in with a par score at each of the other 16 holes on the afternoon. Cook entered the season with just one top-20 finish in his career but has totaled four thus far during his final campaign in the Blue and White.
Wood had a round of 73, which included a pair of birdies on back-to-back holes at the fourth and fifth. Sophomore Jackson LaLonde secured the best round of his tournament with a 75 on day two and concluded the week in 62nd.
Jay Kirchdorfer also saved his best for last with a round of 73 on the final day. He played his opening nine holes at 1-under par and finished in 52nd, playing as an individual.
No. 24 Clemson captured the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2 with an 18-over-par scorecard. Duke finished in second at 34-over, while No. 20 Wake Forest was 42-over. Kentucky was separated by just 12 strokes from a top-five finish.
The Wildcats resume their spring season at the Schenkel Invitational, an event they have played annually for 15 years. The three-day, 54-hole event begins March 18 at the Forest Heights Country Club.
