Kentucky Sees Improvement on Day Two
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Wildcats completed the second round of 18 today at the Long Clove Club for day two of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
Kentucky improved on its first-round placement as the Cats were tied for 16th after play on Monday. However, following the conclusion of day two, UK moved up to 13th which it shared in a tie with Northwestern. Kentucky shot an overall 293 (+9) which combined with yesterday’s scores to lead into tomorrow’s final round with a total of 596 (+28).
“I thought we did some things better today,” said Head Coach Golda Borst. “This golf course demands quality shots and we definitely hit the ball better overall. There are still things that need tightened up, but overall, I was encouraged by today and we look forward to getting after it tomorrow!”
Kentucky’s Maria Villanueva leads the way for the program finishing the second round tied for 38th out of 90 golfers. Overall, she shot a 76 on Monday improving to a 73 today (+7). Both Laney Frye and Rikke Svejgård Nielsen both ended the day tied for 42nd shooting eight-over-par between the two days of play.
Marissa Wenzler is currently tied for 67th after scoring a 78 today and 75 yesterday. Jensen Castle is not far behind Wenzler tied for 75th with a combined two-day score of 155.
Collectively, the team has recorded 18 birdies so far in the tournament. Kentucky Women’s Golf announced the start of a new fundraiser yesterday to aid fellow Kentuckians in the Western region of the state who were devastated by an EF4 tornado in early December of last year. In partnership with the Kentucky Red Cross, the program is asking for monetary donations or pledges. For each birdie made, beginning today and throughout the rest of the 2022 spring season, money will be given to those impacted by the catastrophic disaster.
