Wildcats Complete Challenging First Day of Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky Women’s Golf completed its first 18 holes of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C at the Long Cove Club.
The Wildcats will continue play on Tuesday and Wednesday for the second and third rounds of the tournament in hopes of improvement in both team and individual scores.
Kentucky completed day one tied for 16th with Southeastern Conference-opponent, the University of South Carolina. The overall team finished round one 19-over par, but look to improve on its score of 303 tomorrow in the next round of 18 holes.
“Today’s round was rough, there’s no way around that,” stated Head Coach Golda Borst. “We counted some high numbers early and made several unforced errors, which resulted in a bad day for us. But, with that said, our team never gave in and they kept battling.”
Individually, the Wildcats put up a fight with both Jensen Castle and Marissa Wenzler averaging 2.75 and one-under-par on par-three holes. The pair of Rikke Svejgård Nielson and Maria Villanueva shot one-under par, each scoring 4.67 on par-five holes. Castle, Wenzler, and Laney Frye all shot even par on par-five holes.
“We played a bit tight and tried to guide it, but I am confident that we learned a lot,” said Borst. “I think we will play a bit more relaxed tomorrow. We have a lot of golf left and we are looking forward to getting after it.”
Collectively, the team recorded 10 birdies on round one. Earlier today, Kentucky Women’s Golf announced the start of a new fundraiser to aid fellow Kentuckians in the Western region of the state who were devastated by an EF4 tornado in early December of last year. In partnership with the Kentucky Red Cross, the program is asking for monetary donations or pledges. For each birdie made, beginning today and throughout the rest of the 2022 spring season, money will be given to those impacted by the catastrophic disaster.

The Wildcats will tee off for the second round of 18 beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Frye up first.
