UK Women’s Soccer Falls to LSU, 1-0, on Thursday

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A converted Tiger penalty kick proved to be the game winner as the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team fell to LSU, 1-0, on Thursday night at the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.

Following the loss, the Wildcats drop to 6-8-2 (0-7) on the season while the Tigers move to 9-5 (2-5).

Prior to the start of the match, UK honored their five seniors in Marissa Bosco, Julia Grosso, Miranda Jimenez, Gretchen Mills, and Sarah Siekkinen as part of the senior day ceremony. 

Mills had Kentucky’s first shot on target in the 25th minute, but her attempt to the bottom center went right into the gloves of LSU keeper Mollee Swift. Despite firing off 10 shots in the opening frame, the Tigers were unable to convert any of their chances as UK and LSU went into the break scoreless.

The Wildcats’ best scoring chance of the second half came from Bosco in the 57th minute, but her shot was knocked away by Swift. Laura Nielsen then denied LSU of its own opportunity, coming up with a big save less than five minutes later.

The Tigers were then awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute with Swift’s goal proving to be the game winner.

Kentucky was out-shot 24-8 by its opponent while Bosco and Mills combined for four of those eight. Nielsen finished with seven saves between the posts and Swift made three stops for LSU.

The Wildcats have a week off before returning to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 21 to take on Alabama in Tuscaloosa for an 8 p.m. ET match.
