Josh Paschal Named SEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week

by UK Athletics Communications and PR

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior defensive end Josh Paschal has been named the Southeastern Conference co-Special Teams Player of the Week after his blocked field goal turned the tide in Kentucky’s first top 10 win since 2010, the league announced Monday.

Paschal was a tour de force in the Wildcats’ 20-13 victory over No. 10 Florida on Saturday night, impacting the game both on special teams and defense. His blocked field goal was returned 76 yards for the go-ahead touchdown by freshman linebacker Trevin Wallace, erasing a 10-7 third quarter deficit and infusing the Cats with momentum.

He also was named the Reese’s Senior Bowl Defensive Player of the Week.

Paschal, the only three-time team captain in program history, also was dominant on defense as UK held the vaunted Gators’ offense nearly 160 total yards below its season average. He finished with seven tackles, including 2.5 for loss, and repeatedly made plays near the line of scrimmage as the Cats ended Florida’s streak of 14 consecutive game of 400+ yards of total offense, the nation’s longest active streak.

The senior from Prince George’s County, Maryland, now has three career blocked kicks and the most recent blocked field goal and punt (vs. Tennessee, 2019) for the Cats. For the season, he has 22 tackles, a team-high 6.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and six quarterback hurries.

No. 16/14 Kentucky plays host to LSU on Saturday night at Kroger Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network and the UK Sports Radio Network. Extremely limited ticket availability remains.
