FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – University of Kentucky sprinter Abby Steiner ran the fastest preliminary time in collegiate history and shattered the Southeastern Conference record in the 200-meter dash on Friday at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the University of Arkansas’ Tyson Track Center.

Running in the fifth preliminary heat of the 200, Steiner blazed the oval in 22.41 seconds, breaking the SEC record of 22.43 set by Veronica Campbell of Arkansas in 2004 and her own school record (22.52) set two weeks ago.  Steiner’s mark tied for the third-fastest in collegiate history and was only .03 away from the collegiate record. She put a tighter grip on the fastest 200 collegiate time of the 2021 indoor season and the second-fastest time in the world this year.  In addition to the 200, Steiner also qualified for the finals in the 60m with a time of 7.23 seconds.  She will run both events again Saturday night.

Meanwhile, four Wildcats hit the scoreboard in events that were completed Friday. Sophomore Annika Williams and senior Carly Hinkle each scored in the women’s high jump, with Williams in seventh place at 5’9.25″/1.76m and Hinkle tied for eighth with a leap of 5’7.25″/1.71m.  Also tying for eighth in her event was junior Siobhan Sczerencsits in the pole vault with a personal-best lift of 13’3.5″/4.05m that made her the No. 2 indoor pole vaulter in school history.

The men’s team found the scoring column in the seven-event heptathlon, thanks to a determined performance from junior Joseph Jardine. Heading into the last two events in 13th place, needing to reach the top eight places in order to make the scoresheet, Jardine responded with a 15’11” mark in the pole vault to earn 865 points, his top score of the day.  That elevated him to ninth place overall, but still on the outside looking in heading toward the final event. He finished with a valiant effort in the 1000-meter run.  Back in the pack early in the race, he surged by several runners to a fifth-place finish, posting a personal best time of 2:46.30 to earn 805 points.  That gave him a personal-best total of 5211 points and moved him onto the scoreboard in eighth overall.

Meanwhile, the bulk of Friday’s action was taken by qualifying events for Saturday finals. On the women’s side, in addition to Steiner, UK also had qualifying times from Dajour Miles in the 200, Masai Russell in the 60m hurdles, Megan Moss in the 400m and Jenna Schwinghamer in the 800m, along with Tori Herman and Perri Bockrath in the mile run. Miles (23.21 seconds), Herman (4:39.52) and Bockrath (4:45.58) recorded personal bests.

The Wildcat men had four qualifiers in a total of five events – Lance Lang in the 60- and 200-meter dashes, Tai Brown in the 60m hurdles, Dwight St. Hillaire in the 400m and Dylan Allen in the mile run.

In additions to the ones mentioned above, these personal bests also were recorded:

  • Jacob Smith, 46.61 seconds in the 400m dash, ranks No. 4 on the UK all-time list.
  • Robbie Springfield, 24’3.75″/7.41m in the men’s high jump.  That is No. 10 on the UK all-time list.
  • Matt Duvall, 14:18.71 in the 5000m run, rates No. 10 in UK history.
  • Ethan Kern, 14:32.23 in the 5000m.
  • Kaylyn Heath, 7.42 in the 60m

Heading into the final day of competition, the Wildcat women are in ninth place with 14 points. The men are in 12th place with two points.  The top-eight places in each event score points on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.

Saturday’s action begins at 1:30 p.m. ET and features finals in 11 men’s and 10 women’s events.  Live results can be found at FlashResults.com. Live coverage of the event will air on SEC Network Plus. A tape-delayed broadcast of the championship, called by John Anderson, Dan O’Brien and Dwight Stones, will air on the SEC Network Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
