No. 15 Kentucky Falls 1-0 at No. 20 Marshall
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats (10-3-3, 3-2-1 Conference USA) fell 1-0 to the No. 20 Marshall Thundering Herd (12-2-3, 4-1-1 C-USA) in front of a Hoops Family Field record crowd of 2,032 on Sunday.
With the C-USA postseason tournament still on the horizon, Sunday ended Kentucky’s hopes for a second consecutive C-USA regular season title.
The Cats led the Herd 8-3 in first-half shot attempts, including the period’s only three shots on goal. Freshman Eythor Bjorgolfsson needed only 12 minutes to rack up three of the eight tries and two shots on target. The teams ended the first half tied 0-0.
Despite Kentucky controlling early, it was Marshall that took control in the second. Senior Jonas Westmeyer scored in the 63rd minute to give the Herd a 1-0 lead that would not be relinquished. Kentucky ultimately outshot Marshall 12-6 overall and 5-2 on goal.
The Cats will be back in Lexington, Kentucky, on Friday for senior night at Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. Kentucky will face UAB for the last game of the regular season, scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
