Kentucky Women’s Soccer Defeats Miami (OH) on Sunday Afternoon
LEXINGTON, Ky — Kentucky (4-0-2) defeated Miami (OH) (1-4-0), 3-0, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at The Bell. This game also served as senior day as the Wildcats honored their three seniors in midfielder Gina Crosetti, forward Foster Ignoffo and undergraduate assistant coach Evangeline Soucie.
Goals from Marissa Bosco (11th minute), Hannah Richardson (69th) and Crosetti (88th) paced an aggressive UK attack that registered 19 shots throughout the game with nine on-target. Kentucky held its opponent scoreless for the third-straight game and this victory is the fourth-straight win for the Wildcats.
Miranda Jimenez and Ignoffo played important parts in the goalscoring with an assist apiece. Jimenez’s came on a breakaway counterattack with Richardson streaking forward and Jimenez led Richardson perfectly who got the ball around the keeper and fired it home. Ignoffo’s assist came during the Crosetti goal where she was able to beat a defender along the wing and swing in a lovely ball that was met by Crosetti for a goal.
Goalkeeper Steph Stull continued an impressive start to her career as a Wildcat with six more saves in the game en route to her fourth shutout of the season, while the center back pairing of Valdis Björg Sigurbjörnsdóttir and Rebekka Danielsen continue to be a strength along the UK backline.
Though the first 25 minutes and last 25 minutes of the game were seemingly very in control for Kentucky, the middle of the game was anything but a walk in the park for the Wildcats as the RedHawks found success in their attacking-half, continuing to pressure the UK defense. However, the Kentucky defense prevailed through the rough patches on the way to another important victory.
Head Coach Ian Carry
“I’m very happy with the second half performance from our team, especially the last 30 minutes,” Kentucky head coach Ian Carry said. “It was a little bit frantic going into halftime, so we had a lot to talk about in the locker room. When you go in at halftime ahead and you’re not happy, that’s a good problem to have. We addressed the issues because we felt we were trying too hard to do the simple things. Those last 30 minutes, though, we were able to bring on a lot of energy and use our bench again. I was so happy for Gina Crosetti to get that third goal and what a great piece of individual skill from Foster Ignoffo to play that cross from out wide and Crosetti’s done what we’ve asked our players to do- be at that back post and meet the ball when it’s played in there and you get a first-time strike into the bottom corner. Looking back, we could’ve scored four or five more if we actually did find the corners of the net. I’m so happy for our seniors to get a win on senior day and we hope this momentum will carry us forward into our game against Eastern Kentucky on Thursday.”
