Will Shaner Named GARC Rookie of the Year
AKRON, Ohio – The Kentucky rifle team had 11 All-Great American Rifle Conference selections, plus Will Shaner was named Conference Rookie of the Year and Rena Goodwin earned Assistant Coach of the Year as the league awards were announced on Thursday at the banquet ahead of the GARC Championships.
“It’s exciting to have the Rookie of the Year,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “Will has had a great year and we’re excited for what’s to come. It’s a testament to his hard work and talent to have earned this honor. Also congrats to Rena Goodwin on earning Assistant Coach of the Year, she’s done such a great job for years here at Kentucky and we’re glad she received this recognition.
“Making the All-Conference teams in our conference says a lot because we’re competing alongside All-Americans week in week out. As a coach I’m so proud of our athletes to be able to be honored like this.”
Kentucky (11-1, 7-1 Great American Rifle Conference) finished second in the GARC regular-season standings.
Shaner gave UK the GARC Rookie of the Year for the second season in a row as Henrik Larsen earned the honor last year.
The All-Conference teams were selected based on season averages with the top four individual averages making the first team, the next four best on the second team and the ninth-12th best averages were named honorable mention.
Shaner was UK’s First Team combined selection. Hailee Sigmon and Cathryn Papsodora were second-team All-GARC in combined, and freshman Richard Clark earned honorable mention.
Shaner was also first team in smallbore alongside Cathryn Papasodora.
Sigmon made the smallbore second team. Hanna Carr made smallbore honorable mention.
Ruby Gomes, Clark and Sigmon made the second team in air rifle.
