Second-Minute Goal Haunts Wildcats in Loss to Ole Miss

by Chris Shoals

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky conceded in the second minute of play on Thursday night to Ole Miss, falling to the Rebels by a final of 2-0 at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington.

The Rebels scored one minute and 26 seconds into the match via Channing Foster’s seventh goal of the season with CeCe Kizer getting the assist. There was wide service along the left flank for the Rebels from midfield, and Kizer took a shot that was saved by Payton Woodward. Unfirtunatley for UK, the rebound came out of Woodward’s grasp and onto the foot of Foster, who buried the match’s opening goal into the net.

At halftime, it was 1-0 Rebels, with UK holding serve in shots and shots on goal.

The Rebels struck again in the second half, in the 53rd minute to double their lead again through the boot of Foster. There was a mistaken clearance from the Kentucky backline that was sent into the heart of the Rebel pressure and Ole Miss made UK pay with a shot into the far post by Foster.

With Thursday night’s loss, Kentucky has officially been eliminated from all postseason play. UK falls to 4-13-0 on the season, and is winless in its eight Southeastern Conference matches.

Ole Miss climbs to 10-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the SEC. The Rebels are now on 13 points, and in good position to make the SEC Tournament in Orange Beach with two matches remaining.

Gretchen Mills was Kentucky’s best player on Thursday night, striking for four shots and one on target. Senior Tanya Samarzich registered the Wildcats only other shot on goal of the match.
