No. 13 South Carolina Blanks Kentucky 3-0 in Columbia
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks defended home turf successfully on Sunday afternoon with three first-half goals to rack up a 3-0 win over Kentucky at Stone Stadium in Columbia.
The Wildcats, down five starters with injuries on Sunday, played a convincing second half in the 88-degree heat down a player for 45 minutes; holding the Gamecocks scoreless in the second half on six shots.
Kentucky continued to rotate in young, fresh and exciting talent; as UK started a season-high nine freshman and sophomores in the match today. Only Tanya Samarzich (senior) and Foster Ignoffo (junior) were the exceptions.
With the win, South Carolina moves to 8-2-0 on the season and is 2-1-0 in the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky falls to 4-8-0, 0-3-0 in the SEC. The Wildcats return to the field on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers at the Bell Soccer Complex. The match will be shown live on the SEC Network+ and the ESPN app with Dave Baker (pxp) and Jill Loyden (color) on the call from Lexington.
South Carolina’s first two goals came from defenders on set pieces. Grace Fisk scored her first goal of the season from a free kick in the 11th minute goal as she redirected a re-fire from Rececca Koch.
Carolina doubled its lead on 22 minutes when Tatum Milazzo also scored her first of the season off a corner kick that was touched inside the box. The final USC goal in the 18-minute stretch came in the 28th minute off the foot of Icelandic international Selma Sol Magnusdottir.
