Camacho-Quinn, McLaughlin on Mid-May Watch List for The Bowerman

by Jake Most

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s track and field hurdlers Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Sydney McLaughlin are on the latest watch list for The Bowerman released on Wednesday.

Camacho-Quinn came within .01 seconds of 2016 Rio Olympic Gold Medalist Brianna Rollins-McNeal’s collegiate record en route to the Southeastern Conference title in the 100-meter hurdles.

Fewer than two hours later, McLaughlin won the SEC 400m hurdles gold with a time of 52.75 that bettered reigning World Champion Kori Carter’s NCAA record by nearly a half a second.

They ran the second and third legs of UK’s SEC gold medal 4x400m relay with Faith Ross and Kayelle Clarke. They ran the 11th fastest time in collegiate history, 3:25.99. It was UK’s first mile-relay SEC gold, and the meet record by more than a second.

The 2016 Olympic semifinalist, still not yet a master of the block start, still ran a truly world-class time 12.40 (+1.2) in the 100m hurdles. She broke UK volunteer assistant coach and training partner Kendra Harrison’s SEC Championships and Kentucky school record by .10 second.

Harrison won the SEC 100H Championship in 2014 and 2015, and now Camacho-Quinn has won three-straight years. She’s now a five-time SEC short hurdles champion, plus she was on the winning 4x400m relay.

She moved to No. 15 on the world all-time list.

For perspective, Camacho-Quinn is within .20 of Harrison’s 100H world record.

The 2016 Olympic semifinalist of course obliterated the world junior record that she’s held for three years, having improved the mark seemingly every time she’s run the past two years. The performance was also the 13th-fastest 400m hurdles time ever recorded. The 2016 Olympian became the ninth fastest 400m hurdler on the world all-time list (a few runners have multiple times on the list).

For another eye opener, the freshman ran .85 seconds faster than the then-personal-best time she posted just two weeks ago in her season debut. McLaughlin’s 400m hurdles time would’ve placed sixth in Sunday’s SEC open women’s 400m final.

McLaughlin tied three-time NCAA Champion Shamier Little for the No. 5 performance ever by an American.

McLaughlin won her second SEC Championship, having won the indoor 400m in February. She’s ranked No. 2 in the nation with a 400m time of 50.07 in the rain at the Florida Relays in April.

For perspective, McLaughlin is now .41 seconds off the 400H world record of 52.34 set 15 years ago by Russia’s Yuliya Pechonkina.
