Kentucky Men’s Tennis Exits NCAA Tournament After 4-0 Loss to Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Kentucky men’s tennis team exited the NCAA Tournament in the second round after falling to three seed Ohio State, 4-0, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus.
The Wildcats finished the season at 15-12 while OSU improved 31-2. UK is ranked No. 26 in the ITA team rankings while Ohio State is No. 3.
OSU took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. No. 13 Gus Benson and Cesart Bourgois lost, 6-2, to JJ Wolf and Martin Joyce and Kento Yamada and Ryo Matsumura fell to Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert, 6-3. Will Bushamuka and Austin Hussey fell to No. 61. Benson and Bourgois will compete in the NCAA Doubles Tournament that takes place after the team tournament.
The Buckeyes took a 2-0 advantage when No. 112 Martin Joyce took down Gus Benson, 6-2, 6-0. Benson will finish the singles season at 2-4.
Ohio State gained a 3-0 lead when Austin Hussey lost to No. 96 Kyle Seelig, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Hussey finishes the season 11-12 overall and 3-6 on the No. 5 court.
OSU won the match when No. 50 Will Bushamuka was defeated by No. 41 JJ Wolf, 6-4, 6-4. Bushamuka dropped to 11-9 overall. Bushamuka and Matsumura will compete in the NCAA Singles Tournament at the conclusion of the team tournament.
Three matches were unfinished. No. 8 Matsumura was down 6-4, 4-4 to No. 6 Mikael Torpegaard. Trey Yates was at 5-7, 5-2 against No. 92 John McNally and Kento Yamada was at 0-6, 6-4, 1-2 against Tim Seibert.
