Rifle Prepped for GARC Championships
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The third-ranked Kentucky rifle team is set for the Great American Rifle Conference Championships, hosted by top-ranked defending champion West Virginia on Feb. 24-25, on its new mobile range. Nine teams will take the floor with 75 individual shooters competing in the event. Friday night will kickoff the championships with the regular season awards banquet.
“Going into the conference tournament, I thought we did well in qualifiers,” head coach Harry Mullins said. “Would we like to have had better numbers? Yes, but I think we’re starting to show ourselves that if the group works together as a group, we can get the numbers we’re wanting. We have to work very hard for the group to be successful. I’m looking forward to seeing who’s going to be up to the challenge this weekend.”
Saturday’s competition has been designated smallbore with individuals beginning at 7:00 a.m. ET. Air rifle will commence all day on Sunday. Both days will have an eight-finalist individual format. Fans can follow with live targets.
The Wildcats finished the regular season with seven head-to-head wins against conference opponents and one loss, which came on the range they’ll be shooting at this weekend. UK rebounded from their loss to WVU by getting back above 4700 in qualifying. Three of the nine teams competing this weekend made the NCAA Championships: WVU, UK, and Nebraska as well as individuals from Navy, Memphis, NC State, Ole Miss, and Army.
UK took third at last season’s GARC Championships in Akron, Ohio, following a 4667 aggregate score.
