Jacob Lang Punches Ticket to Nationals, Wildcats Finish 10th at Bermuda Run

BERMUDA RUN, N.C. – Kentucky men’s golf sophomore Jacob Lang secured a spot at the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship, while the Wildcats concluded the Bermuda Run Regional in 10th place as a team on Wednesday at Bermuda Run Country Club (par 71, 7013 yards).

Lang, who on Tuesday tied the program record for the lowest 18-hole score, continued to accumulate accomplishments on Wednesday. The Alvaton, Kentucky native shot 1-under par in the final round to finish T5 at 9-under for the week, marking both his best-ever collegiate finish and his lowest 54-hole total. With that, Lang punched his ticket to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship as an individual by virtue of having the best finish of any player in the Bermuda Run Regional on a non-advancing team. He will move forward to represent the Wildcats at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, May 29 – June 3 in Carlsbad, California.

Lang delivered several clutch moments during round three, including a hole out for eagle on No. 9 (par 4, 389 yards), and a birdie on his final hole, No. 18 (par 4, 385 yards). Those triumphs, in part, helped him edge out NC State’s Rylan Shim by one shot for the qualifying spot.

“I’m pumped for Lang,” head coach Gator Todd said. “He really stepped up this week. He’s been close at home and finally put it together. Playing in an NCAA Championship will be an amazing experience for him.”

Kentucky as a team posted a solid 4-under score in round three, ending the tournament at 2-under par for 54-holes and in tenth place among the 14 competing schools. It marked the fifth tournament this season that the Cats finished under par as a team.

“It’s never easy when a season ends,” Todd said. “I’m proud of our guys for finishing on a good note. We have a really young team that lacks experience and this week will only help us going forward.”

Sophomore Gavin Clutts, who entered the lineup in round three as a substitute, was a standout performer on Wednesday. He carded a 3-under par round which included five birdies and an eagle. Clutts birdied his first two holes of the day on his way to a 33 (-3) on the front nine, and used a birdie on No. 16 (par 3, 203 yards), and an eagle on No. 17 (par 5, 560 yards), to help finish out what matched the best score in relation to par of his college career.

Joining Lang with a third-round score of 70 (-1) was freshman Cole Stockard. After a 38 (+2) on his front nine, Stockard fought back with a bogey-free 32 (-3) on the back side of Bermuda Country Club. It was the second round under par this week for the Dalton, Georgia native, who finished T37 at 1-over par in his NCAA Regional debut. Stockard once again birdied all three par 5s on Wednesday, ending the week 10-under par on the par 5s to lead the entire field. For the week, on the nine par 5s played in total, Stockard had eight birdies and an eagle. He concludes his outstanding freshman season with a team-high 15 rounds under par.

Cameron Phillips was right behind his fellow freshman, Stockard, ending the week at 2-over and tied for 42nd. Phillips also made an eagle in round three on No. 17 (par 5, 560 yards), his second eagle of the week, making him one of three players in the field to record multiple eagles.

As a team, the Wildcats had five eagles in the tournament, tied for the most in the field with the hosts, Wake Forest.

Senior captain Jack Schoenberger concluded his UK career with a 74 (+3) on Wednesday. Schoenberger ended the week in 70th place at 16-over par.

“We’re thankful for our captain, Jack Schoenberger, and the two years he gave us,” Todd said. “I’d sign up for another two years if we could.”
