TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Kentucky track and field teams will begin the postseason at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday and running through Saturday at Alabama’s Sam Bailey Stadium Complex.

The Kentucky women’s team enters SECs ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA computer rankings. Notably those rankings are set up as a projection of how teams will finish at next month’s NCAA Championships based on performances so far this year, not necessarily how teams are set up for conference championships – where teams tend to have more competitors entered than the amount of athletes who qualify for NCAAs.
The SEC Championships begin at 11:30 a.m. ET on Thursday with Tim Duckworth and Cameron Short in the decathlon.
Track preliminary heats of the 800 meters, 200m and 400m hurdles will get under way at 2 p.m. ET.
Thursday’s action will consist of the first day of the decathlon and heptathlon and the aforementioned running prelims.
The only points that will be awarded on Thursday will come from finals of the men’s and women’s hammer throw and 10k. The women’s hammer begins at 5 p.m. ET with the men’s prelims and final to follow. The men’s 10k is scheduled to begin at 11:10 p.m. ET.
Thursday’s competition will not be broadcast, however Friday and Saturday action will be broadcast on SEC Network+. The Friday broadcast is set to begin at 7:25 p.m. ET, and Saturday will start at 3:55 p.m. ET.
ESPN2 will air a comprehensive broadcast of the meet on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
UKTF SEC Outdoor Precedent
The Kentucky women’s team finished third behind Arkansas and Texas A&M at the SEC Outdoor Championships last year in Starkville, Mississippi.
Kentucky earned 99 points, its best finish since 1982 (third) when eight teams were in the league. UK’s best SEC outdoor finish was second place in 1981, the first year the meet was held. UK placed fourth last season.
The Kentucky men placed sixth with 58 points last season, equaling the team placement from the previous season, which was the best since 1996.
Junior Justin Kretchmer will attempt to defend his SEC High Jump Championship on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
Then-seniors Kendra Harrison (100m hurdles) and Keffri Neal (1,500m) also won individual SEC Titles, last season.

Beckie Famurewa won the SEC indoor weight throw earlier this year. She enters this week ranked No. 2 in the SEC in both the hammer throw and weight throw.
How the SEC Championships work
Athletes earn points for their teams at the SEC Championships based on top-8 finishes on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
The meet features 21 events per gender, and the team with the most points at the end wins.
Kentucky contenders
In terms of contenders based on demonstrated performance so far this outdoor season, Kentucky boasts 25 performances that rank inside the SEC top-five this season.
The top-ranked UK women’s team has 17 athletes/relays ranked in the 2016 SEC top-five, while the men’s team has eight top-five performers.
Destiny Carter’s 11.11w to win the LSU Invitational 100m two weeks ago leads the league. Kentucky has three of the top-five 100m performances in the SEC this year as Kianna Gray’s 11.12 and Javianne Oliver’s 11.16 rank No. 2 and No. 5 in the SEC respectively.
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn leads the SEC in the 100m hurdles with a 12.73 recorded a fortnight ago at LSU.
Xaivier McAllister leads the SEC in the high jump with a best clearance at 7’1.75″/2.18m
Jacob Thomson is the SEC leader in the 5k with a school-record PR 13:43.49, recorded two weeks ago at the Payton Jordan Invitational. He ranks No. 2 in the 10k.
