MEN’S BASKETBALL– Top-ranked UK won twice last week to improve to 19-0 (6-0 SEC), matching the team’s best start under coach John Calipari (2009-10) and the third best in school history. Defense, as it has been all season for the Wildcats, was a key as UK defeated South Carolina 58-43 on the road Saturday after outlasting Vanderbilt 65-57 on Tuesday.- Kentucky held South Carolina to 23-percent shooting from the field and has held 10 opponents to less than 30-percent shooting on the year. Against South Carolina, UK had more blocks and steals (17) than South Carolina had field goals (12). UK accomplished that for the eighth time in 2014-15. South Carolina had just five assists, marking the 15th time this season UK has held its opponent to less than 10 assists. In holding South Carolina to 43 points, Kentucky has held its opponent to less than 55 points in 14 of 19 games, the most in school history in the shot-clock era (since 1985-86).- Sophomore guard Aaron Harrison scored in double figures in the wins over Vanderbilt and South Carolina. He totaled 13 points, added four rebounds and a season-high tying three steals on Saturday after leading UK with 14 points on Tuesday, all of which came in the second half. Harrison has made 24 3-pointers over his last nine games and has had a 3-pointer in 11 consecutive games.- Freshman guard Devin Booker charted a game-high 18 points vs. South Carolina, his fifth game with at least 18 points. Booker has stayed hot from 3-point range, shooting 22 for 33 over his last nine games from the perimeter. A member of the Midseason Wooden Award watch list, Willie Cauley-Stein had two steals at South Carolina to become the first player in Kentucky history with 200 or more blocks and 100 or more steals.- Kentucky will play at Missouri at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday.WOMEN’S BASKETBALL– Kentucky got back on the winning track with an 83-69 win at Missouri on Sunday.- Five Wildcats scored in double figures, paced by senior Jennifer O’Neill with 19 points off the bench. O’Neill hit her only 3-point attempt of the game which moved her up to No. 3 on UK’s all-time 3-pointers made list. She needs just one more to tie A’dia Mathies at No. 2. Sophomore point guard Makayla Epps followed with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double.- Senior Bria Goss added a season-high tying 16 points, while sophomore Linnae Harper was a beast once again on the boards, grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with 15 points. It marked Harper’s second straight double-double and her fifth of the season. Freshman Alexis Jennings came off the bench for 10 points and six rebounds in just 22 minutes.- The Wildcats return to Memorial Coliseum on Thursday to face No. 5 Tennessee on the SEC Network. UK has won 13 straight games at home (Rupp Arena included), the school’s sixth-longest home winning streak.GYMNASTICS– The Kentucky gymnastics team fell on the road to No. 10 Georgia, 196.975-194.225 on Saturday in Stegeman Coliseum. The Wildcats (2-2, 0-2 Southeastern Conference) recorded four season-high or career-high-tying scores against the Bulldogs, who scored a season-high team score in front of a sellout crowd of 9.957.- Junior Marissa Beucler and freshman Cori Rechenmacher each led or tied for the team lead on two events. Freshman Brittany Furuyama, sophomore Taylor Puryear and senior Kayla Hartley also tallied team-high-tying scores. Beucler, who had not competed in UK’s first two meets this season, was a late addition to the lineup after an injury during warmups. Beucler finished first or second on all three events she competed in.- UK began the meet on bars with a 48.900, the second-highest total on the event this season. The Wildcats added a 48.775 on vault before a 48.825 on floor, tied for the second-best score this year. On beam, Kentucky closed the meet with a 47.725. Georgia recorded at least a 49.100 on all four events.- The Wildcats return home to host No. 7 Alabama on Jan. 30. The contest is the second annual DanceBlue Meet, where UK will join the fight against pediatric cancer and support the on-campus organization DanceBlue. The team will raise awareness and money to benefit children with cancer who are treated at the Pediatric Oncology Hematology Clinic on the UK campus.RIFLE– The UK rifle team performed solidly over the weekend, scoring 4679 at the Withrow Invitational to finish second among the 10-team field.- Connor Davis recorded a 592 in smallbore to win the event.- Davis, the defending NCAA Air Rifle Champion, scored a 591 in air rifle.- Heather Kirby notched a win in air rifle for the Wildcats with a 594.SWIMMING AND DIVING– The Kentucky swimming and diving teams posted nine individual wins in the Senior Day meet vs. Louisville on Saturday in front of a packed crowd at UK’s Lancaster Aquatic Center. The Kentucky women, ranked No. 31 in the nation, won six events – including two each by Kendal Casey and Danielle Galyer – in a 155-145 loss to No. 13-ranked Louisville. The UK men, ranked No. 36 nationally, got three wins vs. the No. 10-ranked Cardinals, who prevailed the team score 211-89.- Diver Christa Cabot celebrated her Senior Day by opening the meet with a win on the 3-meter board. Later in the day, Rebecca Hamperian, Cabot and senior Lindsay Keahey went 1-2-3 from the 1-meter board. Sophomore Kendal Casey got the Wildcats’ first victory in the pool in the 1,000-yard freestyle, taking the lead midway through the event and surging to win by more than four seconds at 10:03.92. The 500 free proved to the Cats’ best event of the day as Casey (4:56.31), Kelly Berger and Aubrey Jones swam to the first three spots. The 100 backstroke was a strong event for the Wildcat women. Sophomore Danielle Galyer won with a time of 54.24, followed in second place by teammate Bridgette Alexander. Galyer got a second victory in the 200 backstroke with a winning time of 1:57.20.- The UK men got their first triumph in the 1,000 freestyle. As Kendal Casey did for the women, Drew Aviotti had to come from behind midway through the swim before winning with his season-best clock of 9:12.33. In addition, Kyle Higgins put the Cats in the win column in the 200 butterfly at 1:47.92. The men’s divers also got a victory as freshman Levi Lindsey notched 349.58 in six efforts from the 3-meter board.- Kentucky honored 12 athletes on Senior Day, including Christina Bechtel, Christa Cabot, Michael Christian, Brent Dillon, Katrina Keirns, Lindsay Keahey, Blair Kuethe, Abby Myers, Robert Resch, Samantha Shaheen, Derrick Smith and Kristen Wilson.- Kentucky concludes the regular season Friday, Jan. 29, at Cincinnati. The UK swimmers will compete in Cincinnati at 5 p.m. The diving competition will take place in Lexington at the Lancaster Aquatic Center, featuring action on the platform and 3-meter board. Postseason action begins Feb. 17-21 with the Southeastern Conference Championships at Auburn, Ala.MEN’S TENNIS– Kentucky dropped two tight matches this weekend in the ITA Kick-Off event to two top-30 teams, as the Wildcats fell 4-3 in both matches to No. 26 Penn State in the Friday match, and to No. 24 Vanderbilt in Sunday’s consolation final.- Both matches this weekend came down to court six, where both Penn State and Vanderbilt were able to sneak by in the final set of both matches as the Wildcats dropped the matches. Kentucky split the doubles points this weekend, winning the competition on Friday against the Nittany Lions, but falling to the Commodores on Saturday.- UK had both matches feature big comebacks, as on Friday, the Wildcats were leading 3-0 before Penn State rallied to come from behind and win the last four points of the match, while on Sunday, Vanderbilt was up 3-0 on Kentucky, before the Wildcats rallied to tie the match on court five at 3-3 before VU took the final match on court six.- Kentucky is on the road in Columbus, Ohio, at No. 5 Ohio State on Thursday afternoon in the Buckeye State. The match will start at 5 p.m. ET.WOMEN’S TENNIS– The No. 44 Kentucky women’s tennis team advanced to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships with a 4-2 comeback win over No. 32 Arizona State Sunday after a 4-0 win over No. 21 Rice on Saturday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. With the two upset victories, UK advances to the ITA National Indoor Championships for the first time since 2005, when Kentucky went all the way to the championship match.- Sunday’s win came in comeback fashion, after UK lost the doubles point and lost four of the six first-set singles contests. Kentucky stormed back though and claimed second-set victories on five courts, including two that resulted in Wildcat wins to give them a 2-1 lead. Aldila Sutjiadi gave UK its first point with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court No. 2. Mami Adachi finished soon after with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 win on court No. 4 that put Kentucky ahead for the first time in the match. Taylor Lederman responded to a 6-3 first-set loss with a 6-3, 6-4 win on the sixth court to give the Wildcats a 3-1 edge. After Kelsey Dieters suffered a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 loss on court No. 3, Nadia Ravita clinched the win for Kentucky with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win on court No. 1.- Saturday, Senior Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff and junior Kirsten Lewis opened the match with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Attention turned to Dieters and Adachi as they also came out victorious, winning their doubles match 6-2. In singles competition, Sutjiadi was the first to strike and add another point for the Wildcats, winning her match 6-3, 6-1. Adachi increased Kentucky’s lead to 3-0 after a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 4 singles match, and Dieters followed with a win of her own, 6-4, 6-3. The Shelby TWP, Mich., native’s win clinched the 4-0 win for the Wildcats and completed the ITA Kickoff first-round upset.- Kentucky returns to action on Jan. 31 when it hosts Penn State in Lexington.
