Senior Matt Kavanagh provisionally qualifies for NCAA Indoor Championships.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 15, 2000) — Kentucky senior Matt Kavanagh finished first in the 35-pound weight throw during the Wildcat Track and Field Classic this weekend at Nutter Fieldhouse.

Kavanagh’s throw of 65-01.25 provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., in March. Kavanagh also provisionally qualified at the Wildcat Speed Meet in December. His throw was exactly 17 feet further than the next closest competitor, Paul Buschman of Arkansas State (48-01.25).

Also winning their events were Rebecca Wedel in the 20-pound weight throw, Heidi Quast in the shot put and Shevan Threats in the long jump.

Both Chad Johnson and Thomas Morgan set new personal best times in the 800-meter run. Johnson finished third with a time of 1:52.53, while Morgan finished fifth with a time of 1:54.11.

Nine teams competed in the event: Arkansas State, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, West Virginia, Western Kentucky, the women of Austin Peay and host Kentucky.

The Wildcat will host Tennessee, Mississippi State and Alabama at the SEC Quad at Nutter Fieldhouse next weekend, Jan. 21-22.
