UK Track and Field Travels to Virginia Beach for NCAA Indoor Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. – In yet another split weekend for the Wildcats, 10 athletes are set to represent the University of Kentucky in Virginia Beach, Va. this week for the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Mar. 14-15.

The outdoor portion of the Cats’ 2025 schedule is also set to begin this weekend with an in-state meet, featuring the Cumberlands Early Spring Meet on Friday, Mar. 14 in Williamsburg, Ky.

Among the qualifiers for the NCAA Championships for the Wildcats are Carlie Makarawu (M 200m), Luke Brown (M Triple Jump), Kate Powers (W Weight Throw), Alexis Glasco (W 60m Hurdles) and the women’s 4x400m relay team, which features Hannah Douglas, Cha’iel Johnson, Oneika McAnnuff and Stacey Onyepunka, as well as Sharmelle Holmes and Alysia Johnson as first-team alternates.

Last time out, the Wildcats completed competition at the SEC Indoor Championships in Bryan-College Station, Texas with four total medals and three records broken. Makarawu kicked off the meet by breaking the UK men’s 200m record in the preliminary event, the same record he broke two weeks prior at the Tiger Paw Invite on Feb. 15. Makarawu later took home silver in the 200m final on Mar. 1. Brown, who holds the nation’s second-best mark in the men’s triple jump among Division I qualifiers, also took home a silver medal, breaking his personal Kentucky record.

On the women’s side, Kate Powers and Payton Phillips featured as the two medalists for the Cats at the SEC Championships, with Powers winning her first career gold medal in the weight throw final and Phillips claiming bronze in pole vault.

Per the release from the conference office last week, four Wildcats were named to the All-SEC teams, including Powers being named to the All-Conference First Team, and Makarawu, Brown and Phillips also earning all-conference honors.

Following their performance in College Station, the Wildcats moved up three spots in the USTFCCCA rankings this week to No. 23 on the men’s side, their first top 25 ranking of the 2024-25 season.

Along with Kentucky, 15 SEC programs will be competing across 33 total events. As a conference, the SEC will send 138 qualifiers to this week’s championships, including 64 on the men’s side and 74 on the women’s.

The NCAA Indoor Championships will begin tomorrow morning from Virginia Beach, starting with the women’s pentathlon event at 9:10 a.m. EST.
