Two Freshmen Pace UK after the Final Round at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team wrapped up at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Wednesday, with a pair of freshmen pacing the lineup through 54 holes at Long Cove Club (par 71, 6,413 yards) in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Karlie Campbell, who was recently named a Southeastern Conference Freshman Golfer of the Week, tied as the lowest golfer in the lineup for the second time this spring. She was a steady hand in the lineup this week, but it was her final round that proved her capability and comfort leading the Wildcats.

The freshman from Ethridge, Tennessee, went a team-best, 3-over Wednesday, recording three bogeys, one double and a pair of birdies on her scorecard. Her birdies came on the par-3 No. 2, a hole she also birdied earlier in the week, and the par-5 No. 15. Altogether, Campbell went 14-over at The Darius, earning a share of 56th place among the elite field.

Tied with her on a 14-over in 56th place was her teammate and fellow freshman Anastasia Hekkonen.

Hekkonen, who turned in the best round of the lineup this entire week on a 1-over yesterday, turned in a 7-over in the final round Wednesday. She began her day with back-to-back doubles on hole Nos. 10 and 11, then added a third double on No. 18. While attempting to dig herself out of the deficit on the front nine with an impressive six pars and one birdie during a seven-hole stretch, she ran out of holes and landed at 7-over.

The Wildcats as a team went 60-over at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, landing in 17th place. They had their best round of the tournament in the final round Wednesday, going 16-over, which was at least three strokes better than the previous two days.

Cathryn Brown had her best day on the golf course this week, too, assembling just a 3-over, like Campbell, today. It was her best round of the week by at least four strokes. Her day featured three birdies, including the par-4 No. 14, the par-4 No. 5 and the par-5 No. 6. Overall, she came up 18-over at the tournament, tying for 74th place.

López Echevarría shed four strokes off her second round today, recording a 5-over-par 76. Outside of 14 pars in the final round, she recorded a trio of bogeys and one double. The senior, who had her best round on a 2-over Monday, turned in a 16-over tournament total to tie for 67th place.

Brooke Oberparleiter rounded out the Wildcats. She also turned in her best round in the final round, going 5-over. Two birdies down the stretch helped the sophomore, including on the par-4 No. 7 and the par-3 No. 8, holes she hadn’t birdied all week.

Kentucky has just one more tournament on its spring schedule before it takes on the league field at the SEC Tournament at Pelican Golf Club in Tampa, Florida, beginning April 14.
