Senior Matt Kavanagh places third in a world-class field of hammer throwers.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 15, 2000) — The University of Kentucky track and field squadsfinished competition in the Sea Ray Relays Saturday at Tom Black Track onthe campus of the University of Tennessee.
Senior Matt Kavanagh gave his best performance of the outdoor season inthe invitational section of the hammer throw. Competing against otherworld-class athletes, Kavanagh earned third place with a season-best heaveof 214-04.00. His toss was 5-10.00 better than his previous best this yearand also ranks as the second best in UK history. Already provisionallyqualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Durham, N.C., Kavanagh isclosing in on the school hammer record of 221-04.00, which he also holds.
Completing the action for the women’s team, junior Shevan Threats andfreshman Semidele Adeagbo came in 12th and 15th places, respectively, inthe long jump.
Kentucky returns to the track when it travels down I-75 on April 22, 2000,to meet competition in the Colonel Classic at Eastern Kentucky Universityin Richmond.
