The placing earns the senior Wildcat his forth career All-American honor.

Durham, N.C. (June 1, 2000) — Senior Matt Kavanagh earned hisfourth career All-America honor with an eighth-placefinish in the hammer throw Thursday at the 2000NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Kavanagh completed his career at the University ofKentucky by throwing 214-02.00, his third-longesttoss of the season. By finishing fourth amongAmerican competitors, he was named anAll-American outdoors for the third consecutive year.His performance at the 1999 NCAA OutdoorChampionships set the UK hammer record at221-4.00, a distance that qualified him for the U.S.Olympic Trials. Kavanagh also was namedAll-American in the 35-pound weight throw at the 2000NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

“We are pleased he made the finals and got his fourthAll-America,” assistant coach John Kenneson said.”You can’t get too greedy. Last week in practice hewas throwing lifetime bests. Today was a tremendouseffort, but the throws just weren’t there. He is one ofthe best athletes to ever step on this campus.”

Kavanagh will begin training for the Olympic Trials,which will be held in Sacramento, Calif., July 14-23.
