BUFFALO, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2000) — The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team defeated a tough Buffalo squad, 1-0, on October 13. With the victory, the Cats (7-5-0, 3-1-0 MAC) moved into a tie with Akron and Marshall for the top spot in the Mid-American Conference.
The Wildcats burst out of the blocks when sophomore Chris McDaniel beat Buffalo goalkeeper Brian Wozniak for the 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play. McDaniel was able to get a good look at the goal thanks to a nice pass down the left side of the field from junior Ilkka Jantti. The score was McDaniel’s team-leading third on the season, while Jantti’s assist was his second.
From that point, however, the defenses ruled. UK limited the Bulls (4-6-1, 0-3-0 MAC) to only one shot in the first half and six for the match but could only manage three more first-stanza shots en route to 10 for the game. The contest also was quite physical with the teams combining for 36 fouls, including five yellow cards.
Senior Brian O’Leary again kept the nets clear, recording his fifth shutout of the season and reducing his goals-against average to 0.80. He needed only three saves to notch the win.
The Cats return to Lexington to face two-time defending national champion and No. 2-ranked Indiana on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Action at the UK Soccer Complex gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
