Lonergan Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Outdoors With School Record in Discus
ATHENS, Ga. – With 19 top-five finishes and two school records, the University of Kentucky track and field squads had a strongshowing at a Southeastern Conference five-way meet on Saturday, March 31, at the University of Georgia.
Leading the way for the Cats was freshman Molly Lonergan, whose second-place throw of 166-02.00 in the discus not onlyprovisionally qualified her for the NCAA Outdoor Championships but also broke the 19-year-old school record of 164-09.00. Her throwis also third in the SEC this season.
The other school record came from sophomore Elizabeth Kittredge in the pole vault. With a clearance of 10-00.00 at Georgia,Kittredge added nearly a foot to the old record, which she also held.
In the womens 800 meters, UK got an excellent performance from another freshman. Beth Heimann claimed second place in the800 with a personal-best time of 2.11.42, shaving nearly two seconds from her previous best. Fellow freshman Caity Phillips also ran apersonal-best time in finishing second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:32.48.
On the mens side, junior Bill Powers claimed second place in the discus with a toss of 175-00.00, while freshman Jeff Chakouiantook fourth with a throw of 171-09.00. Taking sixth was junior Scott Theis with a personal-best 157-00.00.
Other top-five finishes for the men included: freshman Paul Ciurlys (800 meters), freshmen Justin Amason and Kevin Panke(1,500 meters), senior Andrew VanderWagen (high jump) and Theis (shot put). For the women, the top-five included: freshmanDemetrius Roberts (100 meters), sophomore Janet Crawford and junior Temitayo Adeagbo (high jump), senior Shevan Threats (longjump), sophomore Simidele Adeagbo and senior Falana Greenwell (triple jump), senior Rebecca Wedel (hammer throw), and the 4×100-and 4×400-meter relay teams.
The Cats return to action on April 5-7, when they travel to Austin, Texas, for the prestigious Texas Relays.
