Men's Soccer

The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team has added 13 players to the roster for the 2001 season, Coach Ian Collins announced on Friday, April 20.

The group of talented newcomers joins a UK program that just came off of its best season in history, winning the Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament titles and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The class boasts five transfers, including a former Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and six with experience on the national level.

Nathan Fleetwood
Pulteney Grammar/Virginia Intermont College
Adelaide, Australia

  • In high school, scored 25 goals his last season while finishing in the top 10 percent of his class.
  • Played for Modbury Soccer Club in Australia, which finished third his final season.
  • Also played nationally for Australia’s U17 and U20 teams.
  • At Virginia Intermont, scored 12 goals and seven assists to help lead his team to the conference and regional championships.


Joseph Gaworecki
Cypress Creek High School
Houston, Texas

  • A four-year starter on varsity, named first team All-District three times.
  • As a junior at Cypress, named team MVP and runner-up District MVP.
  • Member of Mu Alpha Theta math honor society
  • Club team won state championship in 1995-2001 and the 1999 Region III championship.
  • Was a member of the South Texas state team from 1997-1999.


Andy Gruenebaum
Blue Valley North High School
Overland Park, Kansas

  • A four-year letter winner, named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Gatorade Kansas Player of the Year.
  • A 2000 NSCAA All-American
  • Member of Midwest Regional team in 2000, and was the 2000 Metro Player of the Year.
  • Also an honor roll student.
  • Played for the Olympic Development Program’s Region 2 team in 2000.


Zach Hjornevik
Klein High School
Spring, Texas

  • At Klein, was defensive MVP as a junior to help team win state title.
  • Received Gatorade Will To Win award as a junior and was named to the Houston Chronicle All-City team.
  • Member of Houston Texans club team that won the state championship in 1996-98 and 2000, and won the Tampa SunBowl in 1996.
  • Member of Olympic Development Program state team from 1997-99.


Olli Lehtimaki
Kaurialan Lukio
Hameenlinna, Finland

  • Played for FC Hameenlinna’s first team from 1998-2000.
  • Played in first division in 1998, second division in 1999 (scored 10 goals) and first division (seven goals and six assists in 26 matches).
  • A regular starter the past two years.


Eric McKechnie
St. Xavier High School
Louisville, Ky.

  • Member of Kentucky State Champions in 2000.
  • Named All-District team in 1999 and 2000.
  • Named All-Region and Colt Cup All-Tournament team in 2000.
  • Member of 1998 Kentucky Region Champions.
  • Member of Javanon Soccer Club from 1995-2000, state champions 1999-2000.
  • Olympic Development Program team member in 2000.


John Monebrake
Pickerington High School/Ohio State University
Pickerington, Ohio

  • As a freshman at OSU, named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in leading team with 15 points and seven goals.
  • Started 16 of 20 games at left midfielder for OSU as a sophomore, and scored three goals and three assists.
  • In high school, named District Player of the Year and the OCC Central’s co-Player of the Year in 1996; two-time captain and twice named to the OCC first team; 65 career goals and 38 career assists; and named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region Selection in 1996.
  • Member of the Olympic Development Program’s state, district and regional teams from 1992-94 and 1996.


Greg Raber
Athens Drive High School/UNC Greensboro
Raleigh, N.C.

  • Started 22 games at goalkeeper in two seasons at UNCG.
  • As a freshman, played 923 minutes with a 0.14 goals-against average.
  • As a sophomore, played 800 minutes with a 1.46 GAA.


Thomas Senecal
The Maret School (Washington, D.C.)
Bethesda, Md.

  • A four-year varsity letter winner at Maret.
  • A unanimous All-Conference selection as team captain his senior season while leading the team in goals and points.


Scot Shewey
Gainesville High School/Jacksonville University
Gainesville, Fla.

  • A four-year starter at Gainesville High.
  • Named Most Valuable Player as a senior, Most Valuable Mid-Fielder as a junior, Most Valuable Defender as a sophomore and Most Improved as a freshman.
  • Led team in assists and goals his senior season.
  • Named All-County three times.


Jamal Shteiwi
Summit Country Day/Indiana University
Cincinnati, Ohio

  • In high school, named All-City and All-State three times, and All-Region twice.
  • Member of Cincinnati United club team that won state championships four times.
  • Invited to adidas Elite Soccer Camp.
  • A transfer from IU who sat out as a redshirt.


Chael Soler
Western High School (Davie, Fla.)/Nova University
Caracas, Venezuela

  • At Western, was an All-County and All-State honree, while being voted MVP and Best Offensive Player as a senior.
  • Participated in the Copa Latina and the Gold Coast Soccer League (Miami, Fla.) with Argentinos United Soccer Club.
  • A Venezuelan national selection with Copa la Amistad in 1989 and 1990.
  • Also played two seasons at Nova University (1998-99 and 1999-2000), winning the region and advancing to Nationals in 1999-2000.


Adam Walker
Bishop England
Mount Pleasant, S.C.

  • At Bishop England, named South Carolina Goalkeeper of the Year in 1999 and Player of the Year in 2000.
  • A member of the South Carolina Elite 20 team.
  • Named All-Region and All-Low Country three times in helping his team win the state title three times.
  • A National Merit Semi-Finalist.
  • A member of the Olympic Development Program Regional Pool in 1999 and 2000.
