Freshman Elin Pudas Remler Remains in the Top 10 at Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wildcats’ women’s golf team dropped back to tied-for-sixth place after a hot start to the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Club (par 70, 6,081 yards) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The young team went 13-over in the second round for a 17-over-par 577 tournament total on Saturday, with 18 holes remaining Sunday.

Veteran Marta López Echevarría bounced back in the second round, turning in a 1-under-par 69. That is an eight-shot difference from the senior’s first round to the second round, which helped her jump more than 20 spots on the individual leaderboard from T60 to T27.

Leading the University of Kentucky women’s golf team is still Elin Pudas Remler, a freshman from Sweden, who paired her first-round 70 with a second-round 71. Her 1-over-par 141 tournament total is good for a share of eighth place ahead of the final round. The rookie, who recorded four birdies on the day, rolled in three straight on hole Nos. 8, 9 and 10.

Pudas Remler, though young, has already led her team once this season, claiming third place in the season opener at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational in early September.

Cathryn Brown, a sophomore from Eddyville, Kentucky, is third in Kentucky’s lineup, assembling a 5-over-par 75 on Saturday. She started her round 4-over on the front nine before she collected a couple of birdies on the back nine for a 1-over. For the tournament, she is 7-over-par 147 and tied for 34th place.

Karlie Campbell, a freshman competing in her first lineup for UK, couldn’t come up with the birdies on the course in the second round that she impressively found Friday. She turned in an 8-over on Saturday, forming an 8-over-par 148 tournament total and dropping back to T42.

The Wildcats’ lineup is young for the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, playing one senior, one sophomore and three freshmen. C.A. Carter, a freshman from Lexington, Kentucky, who has been in the lineup in all three events this season, went 12-over on the day for 14-over for the tournament. She is tied for 64th place in the 90-person field.

Kentucky will look to climb back up the leaderboard in the final round Sunday, teeing off at 9:30 a.m. ET in a shotgun format with Duke, North Carolina and NC State. The field can expect sunny skies and temperatures in the high 70s.

Michigan State replaced Kentucky at the top of the leaderboard after the second round, going 3-over Saturday. The Spartans have a three-shot lead over Tennessee in second place and a five-shot lead over Louisville in third place.

The Wildcats are just eight shots back of first place and three shots back of the top three.
