Men’s Golf Hosts Inaugural Cullan Brown Collegiate Monday and Tuesday

by Greg Welsh

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Honoring the legacy of the late Cullan Brown, a member of the Kentucky men’s golf team from 2018-2020, the Wildcats are set to host the first ever Cullan Brown Collegiate at Lexington Country Club (par 71, 7,280 yards) this Monday and Tuesday.

The tournament will be the first home event for the program since the UK Bluegrass Invitational in the spring of 2015 and will celebrate the life of a great Wildcat who was lost in 2020 after a battle with Osteosarcoma.

“Our program hasn’t hosted a tournament in Lexington in quite some time and this is such a great golf town,” head coach Gator Todd said. “We wanted to start our own tournament and honor the memory of Cullan each year. When I pitched the idea to the leadership at Lexington Country Club, they were all for it and we’re thankful to have the opportunity to host at such a prestigious club. It should be an awesome week and give everybody a great taste of fall in Kentucky.”

The 54-hole tournament will begin with 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday. Monday’s play will open with a 9 a.m. shotgun start while Tuesday will feature a split tee start off holes No. 1 and No. 10 from 9-11 a.m. Fans are welcome to attend, free of charge. Live scoring for the tournament can be found on Golfstat.

The Wildcats are coming off a 10th place finish at the Windon Memorial Classic where they were 25-over par as a team. The Cullan Brown Collegiate is the fourth of five fall events on the schedule for UK.

Kentucky will have both an “A” and a “B” team entered, meaning all 10 players on the roster will have the chance to compete.

Jack Schoenberger, a transfer in his first year with the Wildcats, has been the standout so far this season, leading the team with a 71.89 scoring average and collecting top 20 finishes in all three of his starts. Captain Jansen Preston has a team-high four rounds of par-or-better, while Solomon Petrie has been a reliable counting score in the lineup, with all six of his rounds this season going toward the team total. Joining this trio in the Wildcats’ “A” lineup this week will be Oakley Gee and Michael Hake, each of whom will be making their first starts of the season.

Topping the UK “B” team for the Cullan is grad-transfer Jackson Klutznick, who tied for 14th at the Bearcat Invitational earlier this fall. He is followed by a youthful group of freshmen – Gavin Clutts, Jacob Lang and Jacob Settles – along with redshirt freshman Wesley Beard. For both Settles and Beard this week’s action will be the first of their collegiate careers.
