Many college basketball players have rituals they go through when they step to the free throw line. Sophomore center SeSe Helm’s ritual may be a bit different, but it’s one ritual that has helped her through a very difficult time in her life.

SeSe’s ritual is touching her jersey. It’s not the Kentucky in big blue letters across her chest or her number that she is reaching for, rather, it’s a small patch in the top left hand corner – an American flag with the initials “J.H.” below it.

J.H. stands for Julia Helm, SeSe’s mother. Mrs. Helm passed away last May after a long battle with cancer. She was 49.

“My mother meant everything to me,” SeSe said. “I am very honored that the coaches let the team wear her initials on our jerseys. It really means a lot to me. This season, at least for me, is dedicated to my mother.”

After the tragedy, the whole team, including coaches, players, and support staff, traveled to Bowling Green, Ky., to offer support for the Helm family. It was then that SeSe knew she had more than just team support on the court, she had team support in life as well.

“The team has been a tremendous help,” SeSe said. “When something like that happens, it’s good to know that you have good friends behind you.”

SeSe has more than just her teammates cheering her on. Among many family members, her father, Larnce, makes his way to Lexington for each home game, as well as attending most away games.

“I love having my dad there to watch me play,” SeSe said. “Even though Mom can’t be there with him physically, I know she is still there, watching over both of us. She really wanted me to be successful here, not just on the court either.”

SeSe knows that there is more to life than just a basketball game. Each time she steps to that line she is shooting for more than just her team and the University, she is shooting for her mom.
