LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky track & field program opened the 2003 indoor season with a bang, capturing four event titles, while breaking the school record for the men’s 4 x 800-meter relay. Senior Simidele Adeagbo also got off on the right foot, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships with her triple jump of 43-01.75.
The men’s 4 x 800-meter relay team of Thomas Morgan, Jean Balan, Hunter Spencer and Paul Ciurlys took first place in the event, breaking a 13-year-old school record with a time of 7:25.51. UK had the second-place team as well, which was comprised of Justin Amason, Kris Landers, David Freeman and James Doaty. The team finished in 7:26.35 also breaking the record set by the 1990 relay team led by Bob Whelan, a national champion in the mile.
Senior Janet Crawford set a new personal best in the high jump with her first-place leap of 5-11.25, edging out Georgia Tech star Chaunte Howard. The jump was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Freshman Rachel Kohler finished third in the event in her first outing as a Wildcat, tying her personal best with a leap of 5-08.00.
In the women’s 20 lb. weight throw, sophomores Gennessa Guzman and Nicole Allyn finished first and second, respectively. Guzman won the event with a throw of 57-02.25, while Allyn’s toss registered 55-08.50.
