Athens, Ga. – The 18th-ranked Kentucky women’s tennis team had its seven-match win streak snapped after a 6-1 defeat to the Georgia Lady Bulldogs at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens on Sunday, March 2.
The Cats (11-5, 1-1 SEC) took a 1-0 lead after seniors Jill Buckley and Leigh Bradwell defeated UGA’s Tina Hojnik and Evgenia Subbotina, 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles spot. Senior Shannon Stafford and freshman Nathalie Roels were able to claim an 8-4 doubles win over Anne Nguyen and Douglas Wink at the three-spot.
In singles, Georgia (7-1, 2-0 SEC) was too much for Kentucky. The top four singles spots were all straight-set defeats for Kentucky. At No. 5 singles, senior Amy Trefethen, who was riding an eight-match winning streak in singles, took Evgenia to the brink in a three-set marathon. After dropping the first set 6-4, Trefethen fought back and took the second set by a 6-3 count. In the third, the two fought back and forth before Trefethen was held off in a tie break 7-6(6). At No. 6 singles 119th-ranked freshman Shannon Stough, in the midst of her own seven-match winning streak, lost a tough straight-set match to Alexandra Smith 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
The loss to Georgia comes after a stretch in which the women’s tennis team displayed why it is one of the elite programs in collegiate tennis. During its streak UK defeated five ranked opponents, three of which were in the top-20, and climbed from No. 34 to No. 18 in the Omni Hotel/ITA National Team Rankings.
The Cats will have four days off before hosting Ole Miss at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center on Friday, March 7.
