Freshman takes two-set win in “C” bracket final
Kentucky freshman Joelle Schwenk captured her first collegiate title Sunday afternoon at the SEC Coaches Classic in Peachtree City, Ga. Schwenk took the “C” singles bracket with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vanderbilt’s Helene Stephens.
“It’s really nice to see her get to this level of play,” UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said of the Coconut Creek, Fla. native. “She utilized a relaxed, positive approach and really put it together this weekend.”
Freshman Caroline Winebrenner fell just shy in her bid for her first collegiate title. Winebrenner dropped a tough 7-5, 7-6 (4) decision to Emily Ladyman of Ole Miss.
“Caroline had a great tournament,” Guilbeau said. “Even without the win, this is as good as a championship for her because of the progress she has made.”
Lara Maurer and Christine Simpson also fell short in the “B” doubles bracket. After claiming an 8-4 victory over Natalie Koppelle and Mari Muller of Alabama, the freshman pair fell to a South Carolina duo in the final. Schwenk and Sarah Foster dropped their “A” bracket semifinal match but recovered for an 8-6 win in consolation play over South Carolina’s Christyn Lucas and Magdalena Wojdylo.
The conclusion of the SEC Fall Classic marks the end of fall competition for the Cats. Kentucky begins dual-match play on Jan. 18, 2004 against Murray State and Louisville at UK’s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.
