Kentucky Squares Off at Tennessee on Sunday at Noon ET on SEC Network
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Kentucky women’s basketball program will play Tennessee on Sunday, Jan. 7 at noon ET at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee. It will mark UK’s first Southeastern Conference road game of 2023-24.
The game will be broadcast on SEC Network, with Eric Frede and Christi Thomaskutty on the call. Big Blue Nation can also listen in to the play-by-play on UK Sports Network and / or 630 AM WLAP (locally), with the Voice of the Wildcats Darren Headrick on the mic.
The Wildcats are 8-7 this season, including 0-2 in true road games and 1-0 in the SEC. The Cats are riding a four-game winning streak, while they also have won six of their last eight games.
Kentucky is coming off a triumph over Arkansas in its conference opener, 73-63, last Thursday. UK moved to 8-0 when it has scored at least 70 points in 2023-24.
Ajae Petty, senior forward, led the team with 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, while it marked her eighth double-double of the season. It also marked her fourth 20-10 double-double and her second 20-15 double-double in 2023-24. She is one of just four players in the SEC to have at least eight double-doubles so far in the season, while she is second in the SEC in field-goal percentage (59.0) and second in the SEC and sixth in the nation in rebounds (157).
The Baltimore, Maryland, native also leads the team in scoring (16.3) and rebounding (10.5) on the season. Maddie Scherr (14.6) is the only other player averaging double-digit scoring. However, since returning from the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Kentucky has four players averaging double-digit scoring, including Petty (19.4), Scherr (15.0), Amiya Jenkins (11.3) and Saniah Tyler (10.8). Kentucky also is passing the ball more, averaging 15.9 assists per game – through eight games – since returning from the overseas trip.
Tennessee is 8-5 this season and 1-0 in the SEC, after defeating Auburn in Auburn, Alabama, 75-67, last Thursday. One of its most notable wins of the year is when it took down top-25 Oklahoma, 76-73, during a Thanksgiving tournament in Fort Myers, Florida, on Nov. 25. The Lady Volunteers have an impressive five players averaging double-digit scoring, including fifth-year star guard Rickea Jackson (20.0). She also is leading the team in rebounds (11.2).
Kentucky trails Tennessee, 59-16, in the all-time series, which began in 1973. UK has won two of the last five meetings with UT. The last time UK defeated UT in Knoxville was on Jan. 10, 2019, 73-71.
