Jerrod Roh, an assistant women?s soccer coach at Western Carolina, has joined the University of Kentucky women?s soccer staff, UK Head Coach Warren Lipka announced today. Roh comes to Lexington after serving as the assistant coach in charge of goalkeepers for three seasons with the Catamounts and will assume a similar role in Lexington.
?I?m really excited about the opportunity to work with a professional like Coach Lipka at a great school like Kentucky,? Roh said. ?I?m looking forward to continuing the tradition established here, and I?m ready to get to work with our goalkeepers, Liz Butler and Anne Ogundele.?
In 2003, Catamount goalkeeper Tina Weaver set a school career goals-against average mark, allowing only 1.11 goals per match, good for fourth in the history of the Southern Conference. Six student-athletes earned All-Southern Conference selections from 2001-03 under Roh?s tutelage, including goalkeepers Weaver and Mandi Tinsley. As the Western Carolina goalkeepers? coach, the team goals-against average dropped from 1.78 to 0.95 to 0.86, and the save percentage increased from 77 per cent to 89 per cent. Roh made an immediate impact at WCU, helping the Catamounts to the Southern Conference regular-season title in 2001. He assisted with all operations of the program, including team training, recruiting, academic support, scheduling, travel, equipment, community relations and camp coordination.
?Jerrod brings a wealth of high school and collegiate experience to our program,? Lipka said. ?He has had a great deal of success working with goalkeepers, and we expect him to devote all of his energy into training our goalkeepers at Kentucky.?
Prior to his arrival at Western Carolina, Roh coached the boys? varsity soccer team at Papillion LaVista H.S. in Papillion, Neb. to perennial state top-10 status from 1995-2001, where he administered an academic support program, a preseason conditioning program and summer goalkeeper camps.
Roh also coached the West Omaha/Gladiator U16 Girls? soccer club from 1999-2001and led the team to the state cup championship in 1999. Roh served as the head coach for the Nebraska Olympic Development Program for under-13 boys from 2000-01 while also spending time as a volunteer assistant and goalkeeper trainer for Dana College in Blair, Neb. He has served as a camp instructor at North Carolina, Nebraska, Duke, Creighton, Clemson, Furman, Western Carolina and Kentucky.
Roh was a three-year starter at various positions for Kansas State from 1989-91 and helped the Wildcats to the Big Eight Championship in 1990. He earned a bachelor?s of science degree in secondary education from Kansas State and completed work on a master?s of business administration degree at Western Carolina in May.
The Kentucky women?s soccer team kicks off the 2004 season on Aug. 27 in Lexington against West Virginia.
