NEW YORK – Kentucky track and field alumna Lisa Morgan was inducted into the Armory Coaches Hall of Fame by the famed indoor track venue in New York City, last weekend.
Morgan was inducted alongside alphabetically, A.P. Randolph’s Phyllis Anderson (now of St. Peter’s University); Fordham Prep’s George Febles; Mount Vernon’s Walter Hall; Christian Brothers Academy’s Tom Heath; Philadelphia’s Tim Hickey; Uniondale’s Dennis Kornfeld and Stuyvesant’s Mark Mendes.
“I am truly humbled, this is phenomenal,” Morgan said during last weekend’s ceremony. “Oh my gosh, this is it, to be recognized by the Armory, and the legacy this place has … wow. I love track and field, and this sport is my life’s work, my life’s dream … to be honored and recognized for it, at a place that means so much to all of us, and to see my name go up on that (Hall of Fame) wall, and in such great company, well, as I said, I am just humbled.”
Morgan was a middle-distance runner at Kentucky.
Still she went on to her ongoing decorated coaching career at the prep and collegiate ranks in New Jersey.
She also brought that success to the international level as Morgan turned in another successful stint on the Team USA staff this past summer as women’s team head coach at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships.
With 21 total medals, including 11 golds, the 2016 U.S. U20 Team matched the 2002 and 2014 teams, and the 11 golds equal the second-biggest haul ever behind only the 13 won in 2004.
The women on Team USA, led by head coach Morgan, won five of those golds.
In 2010-2011 she served as the distance coach at the IAAF World Youth Championships in France.
Morgan served as head coach for Team USA in 2012-2013 when she led 43 athletes and 12 staff members on a three-week overseas trip to Ukraine for the World Youth Championships. In 2014, Lisa coached Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
