Kentucky women?s basketball reserves Afton Perry and Oreonna Taylor have requested and been granted releases to transfer, UK Coach Mickie DeMoss announced Thursday. Perry intends to enroll at Morehead State and play for former UK Hoops assistant Matthew Mitchell while Taylor did not specify what schools she is interested in attending.
?I thank Afton and Oreonna for their hard work and commitment to our program,? DeMoss said. ?They both would like to play more and with all five starters returning and a nationally-ranked recruiting class coming in next season, I understand their concern for more playing time. We will help them in any way possible and we wish them the best of luck. We will continue to follow their basketball careers as they will always be a part of the Wildcat family.?
Perry, a 6-1 sophomore forward from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., played in 19 of 28 games as a freshman before sitting out the entire 2004-05 season with a knee injury. After extensive rehabilitation, Perry returned to play in 25 of 31 games in 2005-06 when she averaged 5.7 minutes, 1.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.
?This was a very hard decision for me,? Perry said. ?I love my teammates and coaches at UK but I have to do what is best for me. The past two years have been awesome but I feel like I can contribute more on the court at Morehead. I will continue to support my teammates and coaches at Kentucky and will be back to watch them play whenever possible.?
Taylor, a 5-6 freshman point guard from Rochester, N.Y., saw action in eight games in a reserve role. She averaged 3.1 minutes per game.
?I love being at Kentucky,? Taylor said. ?The team, they are my sisters, and the coaches have been so supportive. They are more of a family to me than I ever expected and I love my family. It?s difficult for me to leave but I?m a competitor and I need to compete. Coach DeMoss taught me so much and I?m going to be able to take that knowledge of the game and apply it to wherever I?m going to go.?
