LEXINGTON, Ky. – – The University of Kentucky track and field teamed up with the University of Louisville to defeat Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame in the first ever `Kentuckiana’ Border Battle on Saturday at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky.
The Commonwealth walked away with a home victory over Hoosierland with the men winning 103-99 and the women 100-96.
Kentucky contributed eight first-place victories to the Commonwealth win including both of the men and women’s 4×100 relay teams.
Junior David Banks landed a new school record with a leap of 15.67m (51 feet, 5 inches) in the men’s triple jump. Banks’ new school record ruptures the 29-year-old record set by Bethel Ward in 1981. Banks also contributed points in the men’s long jump with a third-place finish and jump of 7.20m (23 feet, 7.5 inches).
Women’s senior sprinter Jenna Martin topped the competition in both the 200m and 400m dash. Martin ran a 24.54 and 54.25 respectively. Freshman Shiara Robinson followed right behind Martin in the 200m dash claiming second place with a time of 25.09, while junior Brittany Cabbler was on Martin’s trail in the 400m race with a time of 55.97.
For the women’s field events, junior triple jumper Ke’Undra Bishop toppled the competition with a first-place bound of 12.10m (39 feet, 8.5 inches).
Sophomore Samantha Stenzel and junior Mary Chris Durham were the top contributors for the Commonwealth in the women’s pole vault. Stenzel won the event with a 3.85m vault (12 feet, 7.5 inches). Durham took third place with a vault of 3.75m (12 feet, 3.5 inches).
Men’s sprinters, sophomore Alex Williams and freshman Sean Lange ran a tandem finish in the men’s 100m dash. Williams earned first with a time of 10.72 and Lange followed in second running a 10.73. Lange also followed the winner in the men’s 200m dash where he finished with a time 21.53.
In the men’s 400m event, senior Kwasi Obeng and junior Sharif Webb had a similar 1-2 finish as Williams and Lange. Obeng finished on top with a time of 47.63, while Webb claimed second place running a 47.86.
For the throwers, junior men’s thrower Colin Boevers finished first in his specialty event, the discus throw. Boevers threw 56.20m (184 feet, 4 inches) to claim victory.
Women’s senior throwers Kristin Smith and Ashley Muffet both finished in the top five of their events. Smith produced a throw of 60.56 to win second place in the hammer throw and Muffet finished in fourth place with a throw of 15.09m (49 feet, 6.25 inches) although her score did not contribute to the Commonwealth team score.
The Kentucky track and field team returns to action April 17, for the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
