LEXINGTON, Ky. — After seven seasons with the University of Kentucky men’s golf program, including two years as associate head coach, David Trainor has been named the head coach at the University of Akron, it was announced Monday.
“I am very happy for David, his wife, Landon, and their son, Will, for this great opportunity,” UK men’s golf head coach Brian Craig said. “David has been a vital part of this program for the past seven years and he will be sorely missed by all, not only as a coach, but as a good friend. He has the skills, the passion and the leadership to help the University of Akron do great things. The Akron men’s golf program is getting a great coach and a fantastic person.”
Trainor served as an assistant coach for the men’s golf team for five seasons before being promoted to associate head coach at the beginning of the 2009 season. During his time with the Wildcats, Kentucky had two top-eight finishes at the NCAA Championships, finishing seventh in 2005 and fifth in 2006. In his first season as assistant coach, Trainor helped lead UK to the 2005 Southeastern Conference championship and has guided UK to three top-six finishes at the SEC Championships.
A native of Berwyn, Pa., Trainor helped coach three PING All-Americans during his time at UK, including 2005 SEC Golfer of the Year J.B. Holmes. Trainor also helped UK student-athletes stay focused in the classroom with three players being named Cleveland Golf All-American Scholars during his time, while Holmes and Matt Wells were named Academic All-Americans.
Trainor was a four-year varsity letterwinner at the College of Charleston, where he graduated in 2000 with a degree in business administration. While at Charleston, Trainor received the Coaches Award in 1997 for his leadership and dedication to the men’s golf team. He was also a three-time Club Champion at Aronimink Golf Club, which is ranked in the top 100 courses by Golf Digest.
Trainor will officially take over the Akron program on July 5 as the 19th head coach in the program’s 78-year history.
