LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team (12-5-0, 5-4-0 SEC) will look to jockey for position in the race to Southeastern Conference Tournament as the Cats will take on the Ole Miss Rebels (6-10-1, 2-7-0 SEC) in a critical SEC clash on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex. Sunday’s game will also serve as a Senior Day celebration for Kelsey Hunyadi, Emily Rogers, Kiondra McGee and Jenna Goblirsch.
Senior captain Kelsey Hunyadihas had a remarkable season, and is showing no signs of slowing down. On Thursday night, the Dublin, Ohio native scored both Kentucky goals in a 2-0 win over Mississippi State, including one off of a penalty kick. Hunyadi has been stellar on the PK stripe for UK this season, converting on all five attempts. Hunyadi also recorded a UK single-game record, firing 11 shots against Mississippi State.
The two goals scored by Hunyadi put her into double-digits for the year, charting her ninth and tenth goals on the 2011 campaign. Her 10 goals rank her as on of only five players in the SEC with 10 goals on the season.
Kentucky leads the all-time series with the Rebels 9-7-1, However the Wildcats haven’t claimed a victory against Ole Miss since a 2-0 win in Lexington in 2007.
UK’s defense has been stifling lately, as the Wildcats have not allowed more than two goals in a game since October 2nd vs. Florida in a 3-0 defeat. The back four of Kiondra McGee, Ashley VanLandingham, Alyssa Telang and Kacie Kumarhave formed a chemistry that is allowing a scant 1.11 goals a game.
One of the biggest reasons for Kentucky’s defensive success has been the insertion of Kiondra McGee. McGee started on the back line in UK’s 1-0 win over 14th-ranked Tennessee in double-overtime, and has been a starter in every game since on the back line. The Cincinnati, Ohio native has logged the most minutes in her career out of anyone on the roster, charting over 3,000 minutes in the blue and white.
Jenna Goblirsch and Emily Rogerswill also both be participating in the Senior Day festivities. Goblirsch suffered a season-ending injury on the first day of preseason, after being voted a captain of the team in the weeks leading up to preseason.
Rogers suffered the same injury luck as Goblirsch, as she was sidelined with a knee injury in her sophomore year. Rogers returned to the line-up for the Wildcats her junior year. She has since retired and joined the coaching staff as a student assistant coach with the team.
Kentucky has already recorded five SEC wins this season, even with two contests left in the year. The five wins are the most conference wins for UK since the 2006 squad collected six league wins.
Senior Day festivities will begin 15 minutes prior to kickoff.
