CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – After battling a tropical storm the last two days, the Querencia Cabo Collegiate has officially been called off and results will be based off round one scores. The University of Kentucky was tied for second in the event, with an 11-over-par first round on Sunday, finishing three strokes behind Ole Miss for first place.
Sophomore Will Bishop took first place individually in the event with a 2-under-par, 70 on Sunday. The round of 70 equaled a career-low for the Lexington, Ky., native and was his first collegiate tournament win. Bishop recorded five birdies and won the event by two strokes.
“A big congratulations to Will Bishop for earning his first collegiate victory,” head coach Brian Craig said. “It even happened on his birthday which makes it all the better. Will has been on a steady track of improvement for quite a while now. It is great to see his hard work and dedication pay off.”
The teams teed off around 5:00 p.m. ET on Monday evening, completing 13 holes before halting play at 9:00 p.m. due to darkness. Officials attempted to conclude play on Tuesday but weather in the Mexican peninsula was too harsh.
“Our boys played their hearts out but, unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate,” Craig said. We had six holes to play and were in a very tight race with Ole Miss for the championship but could not finish. I honestly believe that we would have prevailed had we been able to finish but I am still proud of our guy’s effort. This team had a solid fall season and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish in the spring season.”
Cody Martin also turned in a strong performance for the Cats, shooting a 2-over-par, 74 and was tied for 12th overall. Martin equaled Bishop, sinking five birdies on Sunday.
Chase Parker recorded four birdies and was tied for 31st at 5-over, while Stephen Powers placed tied for 36th at 6-over. Sophomore David Snyder shot 12-over and finished tied for 57th.
Freshman Harrison Greenberry competed as an individual and was tied for 41st after posting a 7-over-par, 79.
