One of the pleasant developments of spring practice was the play of Fontaine as he converted from defensive end to linebacker … The new position proved well-suited to his rangy frame and notable athletic ability … Also could see significant action on special teams … Has gradually added weight and strength through his workouts … Has played in 12 games.

2002 (Redshirt Freshman): Played in all 12 games, seeing extensive playing time on special teams and occasional duty at defensive end … Made nine tackles and was credited with two quarterback hurries … Played on the kickoff return and punt return teams that helped Derek Abney take back six kicks for touchdowns and break or tie numerous NCAA, SEC, and UK records … Earned his first varsity letter.

2001 (Freshman): Redshirted.

High School: Played eight years for the Myers Raiders club team in Ottawa, the same club team that produced current New York Giants Jesse Palmer and Pat Woodcock … At various times, played defensive back, linebacker, and end on defense and wide receiver on offense … Coached by Dan Murphy … Attended Sir Robert Borden High School in Ottawa, where he played basketball and was a member of the track and field team … Five-year starter in basketball, helping his team advance to the city finals one year … Once played against former Wildcat Jamaal Magloire … Participated in the 200- and 400-meter runs for the track team, advancing to the regional meet … Also was a long jumper who advanced to the provincial finals … Best long jump was seven meters, which is approximately 23 feet … School’s athlete of the year for two years.
