Kentucky Defense Continues to Create Turnovers

by Tim Letcher

No. 12 Kentucky is off to a 6-1 start this season, and there are a number of reasons why. One of the biggest factors has been the UK defense’s ability to take the ball away from opponents.

The Cats have recovered five fumbles this season, while losing four. However, the interception numbers have been huge for Kentucky in 2026. UK has 11 picks this season, while the Kentucky offense has just one interception.

It may appear that the UK defensive backs are making plays, and they are, but Kentucky safety Ty Bryant said that the defense as a whole can make those turnovers happen.

“I think the rush has been amazing,” Bryant said. “They’re the reason ultimately why we are getting so many turnovers. On top of that, we’re in the right place at the right time, making plays on the ball.”

Bryant pointed to two of his defensive linemen who have helped him make big plays this season.

“Mi’Quise (Humphrey-Grace) is the reason what the ball was hanging up there forever,” Bryant said. “Guys like that are getting rushes. My first pick against LSU, ‘Chops’ (Jamarrion Harkless) is the reason why that happened. He put the (offensive lineman) into Sam Leavitt’s lap.”

Bryant also credits defensive coordinator Jay Bateman for having a good scheme that allows the Cats to make big plays.

“I think Coach Bateman does a really good job of putting us in position to create turnovers,” Bryant said. “And I think that the (defensive) line helps us in the back end and we help them as well. I think that they do an amazing job.”

Another player who has really come into his own this season is linebacker Grant Godfrey. Bryant is very happy to see good things happening for Godfrey.

“It’s amazing to see him finally get his flowers,” Bryant said. “I was a listening ear for him when he was a little frustrated about what was going on. It’s just amazing to see how much he’s grown and improved as a player. He makes our job easier. He’s a smart guy who communicates a lot and he knows a lot.”

The UK defense continues to be opportunistic in taking the ball away from opponents. That trend has been a big part of the reason for the 6-1 start for the Cats.
