Kentucky’s Brock Coffman and Kenny Darby Earn SEC Weekly Honors
Kentucky wide receiver/punt returner Brock Coffman and wide receiver Kenny Darby have earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors, the league announced Monday. Darby is the freshman of the week for the second consecutive week and Coffman the co-special teams player of the week for performances in a 35-34 overtime victory over No. 10 LSU, the Wildcats’ second top 10 win of the season.
Coffman, a 6-foot, 181-pound Lexington native, helped UK offset a first quarter that saw LSU control time of possession. He turned in a 55-yard punt return for his first collegiate touchdown, which was a thing of beauty. He caught the ball at the UK 45-yard line. He immediately broke a tackle, cut to his right, then circled backward; broke another tackle by stiff-arming a defender; found daylight and zipped down the right sideline into the endzone.
Coffman’s play is Kentucky’s first punt return for a touchdown since 2021, when Josh Ali had a 74-yard jaunt at Mississippi State. He is the first UK player with a punt return touchdown against an AP Top-10 opponent since Derek Abney at No. 7 Florida in 2002.
Darby, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder from Bossier City, Louisiana, played a critical role in UK’s second consecutive dramatic victory. For the game, he caught four passes for 79 yards, including two crucial receptions late in the game.
With Kentucky trailing 27-24 on its last possession in regulation, Darby caught a 19-yard pass that he carried to the LSU 23-yard line. Four plays later, Adam Zouagui hit a 33-yard field goal that sent the game into overtime. In the overtime, on third-and-eight from the 23-yard line, Darby caught a short pass at the 19-yard line, ran forward to secure the first down, then dragged a horde of tacklers all the way to the one-yard line. All totaled, it was a 22-yard play that set up C.J. Baxter’s one-yard touchdown.
Darby averaged 19.8 yards on his four receptions and his 79 receiving yards are the most for a Kentucky true freshman vs. an AP Top-10 team since Barion Brown had 145 vs. Georgia in 2022. In the past two weeks, which have each garnered SEC Freshman of the Week honors, Darby has totaled 16 receptions for 175 yards and a score.
The No. 15/17 Wildcats (5-1, 3-1 SEC) travel to Oklahoma on Oct. 17 to face the Sooners in Norman, Oklahoma for the first time since 1980. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will air on SEC Network.
