'Good, Talented' Wide Receivers Continue to Improve

With the first game just two weeks away, the Kentucky football team held its second scrimmage of the fall on Saturday inside Kroger Field.

The wide receiver room is one that head coach Will Stein is excited about. Stein discussed his wideouts following Saturday’s scrimmage.

“They’ve done a good job,” Stein said. “I think there’s some really good, talented players in that room. Again, a lot of unproven production. The most returning production from last year’s squad, I believe, you guys can fact check me, is DJ Miller. He had 13 catches for 175 yards.”

While Miller has the most returning production in a Kentucky uniform, Stein and his staff brought in players who have been productive at other stops, and those players will be counted on to have an impact on the offense this season.

“So, Shane Carr (is) coming in with a lot of production,” Stein said. “Nick Anderson over the course of his career has been productive, but it hasn’t been as of late because of injury. Where I like guys like Ja’Kayden Ferguson with some big upside.”

A couple of newcomers and a local product have also made strong impressions in camp, even though they might not be as well-known of some of their teammates.

“I like Kenny Darby. That guy is super talented,” Stein said. “Prince Jean has had a really great camp. Brock Kaufman is super reliable. So there’s some guys, I would say kind of the no-namers that people don’t really. So there’s some guys, I would say kind of the no-namers that people don’t really know yet that I’m really excited about. So again, they’re young and they’re talented, but unproven.”

As for the quarterback who will be throwing them the ball, Stein has been impressed with Kenny Minchey.

“Today, I thought he did a nice job of throwing the ball where he was supposed to,” Stein said. “There were some drops that are out of his control, but I thought for the most part today he played within himself and went where the ball was supposed to go. He’s still a guy that hasn’t played and started games, so there’s going to be some growing pains in practice to get him to where he needs to be. But Kenny’s had an elite camp. He’s had a really good camp. He’s improved. I thought he had his best week of practice.”

The offense continues to improve as the season gets closer, and it appears that Minchey will have a lot of pass-catching options this season.
