Wildcats Wrap Up Second Round at the SEC Championship
TAMPA – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team wrapped up the second round of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at The Pelican Golf Club (par 70) in Tampa, Florida, turning in a 8-over team scorecard on Saturday.
The Wildcats are 17-over through 36 holes, remaining in 13th place. They’re 18 shots outside of the top eight on the team leaderboard, which will be the cut line after three rounds of stroke play Friday through Sunday. Those top eight teams will advance to the match-play quarterfinals on Monday morning.
Team veteran Cathryn Brown remains the team leader after 18 holes on Saturday.
The junior from Eddyville, Kentucky, followed up her 1-under in the first round with a 2-over in the second round. She was in position to go under-par once again, but a double on the par-4 No. 8 and a bogey on the par-3 No. 9, which were both holes that gave the field a lot of trouble Saturday, set her back.
Brown is still in contention for her second top-25 individual finish at the SEC Championship in just three appearances there, boasting a team-best, 1-over tournament total for T29.
C.A. Carter mirrored her first round with another 2-over in the second round on Saturday.
The sophomore from Lexington, Kentucky, proved her ability to shake things off after overcoming a pair of doubles on each side of the golf course with birdie opportunities on Nos. 17, 4 and 7. In her first time competing at the SEC Championship, she is just 4-over though 36 holes and in a tie for 48th place.
Anastsia Hekkonen made the biggest jump of anyone in the lineup from the first round to the second round, following up her 5-over on Friday with a clean even-par on Saturday. In fact, the sophomore, who is competing in her second SEC Championship, was 2-under on the round but she was plagued with two bogeys on her final two holes on the par-4 No. 8 and the par-3 No. 9.
With her 5-over tournament total she still moved up more than 10 spots on the individual leaderboard to find a tie for 54th place ahead of the final round.
Raleygh Simpson went 4-over in the second round to form a 7-over tournament total for a share of 63rd place. She sandwiched a couple birdies on hole Nos. 15 and 17 in between a trio of bogeys on each side of the golf course, which kept her from gaining any momentum.
Karlie Campbell improved upon her first round by one shot in the second round, turning in a 5-over on Saturday. The sophomore from Ethridge, Tennessee, who led the team at this tournament just a season ago, had a colorful scoredcard in the second round, which featured three birdies on her second nine, including two birdies in her final three holes of the afternoon.
She is sitting tied for 70th place.
The Wildcats will tee off in the final round Sunday beginning at 9:10 a.m. ET off the 10th tee. They’ll be paired with Alabama and Georgia.
